Asst. police inspector suspended,3 other arrested under for cheating a builder

Mumbai, Nov 18: An asst. police inspector Sanjay Mali who was deputed at the Santacruz Police Station in Mumbai was suspended with immediate effects and other three who were accused namely Raju Sawant, Maruti Gohil and Mahesh Shetty have been arrested by Mumbai police under the Indian Penal Code sections under the charge of cheating a builder for Rs 3 crore on the guise of exchanging his older Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banned currency notes.

Bandra-based builder Sanjay Naik, has accused that Mali referred him to Raju Sawant who was previously working with a homeguard to exchange the scrapped 500 and 1,000 rupee notes. Mali promised Naik to get his older notes exchanged with the help of a bank manager. The exchanged amount was told to be deposited into a non-performing bank account, transfer it into another account through RTGS and then credited into Naik’s account.

As per a police officer, after the handover, Sawant along with his partners approached towards the bank. The API along with Sawant and his associates fled with the bags on seeing him. Naik, who was standing near the car, fled too.

As per the Joint Commissioner of Police, Deven Bharti, the builder, after two days, approached the Santacruz police station. However, the police has arrested three accused and are looking for the rest. It has also been reported that the police commissioner has assigned the deputy police commissioner Satyanarayan Choudhary to investigate the API’s role.
